Martin Macias Honorary Scholarship Fund
From the beginning, it was important that we acknowledge the perseverance of students who have mastered English as an additional language and proven themselves to be academically successful.
Esperanza, the first recipient of the Macias Scholarship, attended Orange Cove High School in a rural, agricultural town located in eastern Fresno County. She is now a graduate of UCLA and has plans to attend medical school.
Her name translated: Hope.
The mission of the Martin Macias Honorary College Scholarship is to promote hope in every student we serve. Hope for the future and hope for opportunities.
The English Learner Group has awarded over $80,000 in scholarships to over sixty-five students from forty high schools across California. The scholarship’s namesake, Martín Macías, immigrated from México to the United States as a young student and continues to achieve academic, professional, and personal success. His leadership has contributed to the success of multilingual learners in many ways. Mr. Macías has served as the Superintendent of Schools with Golden Plains Unified School District in Fresno County, California, has been honored as “Superintendent of the Year” by CALSA, and is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services for Merced County Office of Education.
